Do You Want to Get Well?
In the fourth message of "The Questions God Asks Us," Pastor Bert Cloud shares that he was diagnosed with cancer just days before preaching this sermon, and speaks with remarkable openness about what it means to be asked, in the middle of that news, "Do you want to be made well?"
Turning to the story in John 5 of a man who had waited by the pool of Bethesda for 38 years, Pastor Bert unpacks what it looks like when Jesus bypasses the systems we think healing is supposed to follow and simply says, "Get up." Drawing on the writing of Kate Bowler and a deeply moving story from his years as a pastor, he explores the hard truth that healing is not always curative, that we don't always get the outcome we pray for, and that God's presence in the valley is its own kind of wholeness.
This is an honest, tender sermon about what it means to trust God with a body, a diagnosis, and a future we cannot control.
