Where Is Your Brother?
"Am I my brother's keeper?" It might be the most famous deflection in scripture, and Cain already knows the answer when he says it. In the third message of "The Questions God Asks Us," Pastor Bert Cloud turns to the story of Cain and Abel, tracing how a moment of unregulated anger leads to murder, and how God's question, "Where is your brother?", cuts straight through Cain's evasion. Drawing connections to Jesus's teaching on loving God, neighbor, and self, and to the parable of the Good Samaritan, Pastor Bert makes the case that the circle of who counts as our responsibility is far larger and more porous than we would like it to be.
Through personal stories about raising two daughters and River Road's own recent mission drive for incarcerated youth, this sermon is a challenge to keep expanding that circle, and to recognize that the people around us, near and far, are indeed ours to care for.
